When is the Best Time to Buy a Medigap Policy?

Buy Medigap During Your Open Enrollment Period

The best time to buy Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is when you’re in the Medigap Open Enrollment Period. Open Enrollment begins on the first day of the month in which you’re both 65 years old (or older) and enrolled in Medicare Part B.*

If you apply for Medigap during your Open Enrollment Period, the insurance carriers cannot do medical underwriting. As a result, they can’t charge you more for a Medigap policy than they would charge someone with no health problems, nor can they refuse to sell you a Medigap policy.

It’s very important to buy Medigap during your Open Enrollment Period for the above reasons, but also because it is generally least expensive during this period and you’ll have more choices among policies.

If you’re interested in a personalized Medigap quote, we are happy to provide one for you at no cost and no obligation.
